Becoming Unstuck--Geographically
My life was good before I connected to an EMDR therapist but there was one area that didn't seem to change: my relationships with men. My life had changed and improved vastly through being in Al-anon, the 12-step program for families of alcoholics and developing a relationship to God. Throughout my life I had been involved in spiritual communities. I lived in an ashram with followers of a Kundalini yoga teacher, was part of a Buddhist meditation community for 23 years and later a Sufi community. All of this helped, but my original family life with an angry, alcoholic father, left me scarred in ways I couldn't change.
At the suggestion of my sister, I started working with an EMDR therapist. My major impetus was to help with the torturous feelings I was having over looking for a house to buy this year and to change the way I see myself and my capacity for a relationship with a man.
I have been working with my EMDR therapist for about 6 months. The work that stands out most dramatically is when I became "unstuck geographically," freeing me to be able to move further away. Since I can't afford to buy where I live now, this was necessary to pursue buying a house. The work involved first seeing the road to an outlying town where I was considering moving as an "umbilical cord" that was "too long" from where I live now: close to family, my Alanon community and work. We processed some of the features of the "road umbilical cord." After this experience I drove to the city in question and it no longer seemed unsafe or too far away from everything I know. The road and the town seem close, hospitable and friendly. It seemed that now I was the center of the universe, not a place.
I feel committed to working with my therapist who is an inspiring person, who "has what I want" and will keep going until I have gained all the attributes I want as a person. We have done a lot of work on relationships with EMDR that can be saved for another time. I have a sense of moving more freely and quickly in my life since working steadily with an EMDR therapist.Read more EMDR success stories
